How to Change a Tire on a Travel Trailer
Introduction: How to Change a Tire
Hi my name is Joe Eichacker and I am an Agriculture production student at Lake Area Tech. Have you ever needed to change a tire and thought to yourself I'm not sure how to? I will show you the correct way to change a tire. I feel that I am the best person to deliver this presentation because I have many hours of experience in my life from growing up on the farm, and I have changed several tires from small 4-wheeler tires to large tractor tires. You should know how to change a tire because you may be stranded one day all by yourself in the hot or cold weather, which is not good because it may be a stressful task to do. I am going to show you In five simple steps on the correct way to change a Polaris Ranger Tire. Do you know what a donut is? No, not the kind of donut you eat, a donut can also mean a small, temporary spare tire that is designed to get you to a service station, or home, for a proper tire repair or replacement.
Step 1: Collect Supplies
Supplies needed for this demonstration - Polaris Ranger, Tires, Jack, impact wrench, socket.
Also some Background info- you should know that the lug nut on the tire is 17 mm, therefore it will need a 17 mm socket.
You will need a motorized vehicle to change a tire on, for example, I am using my Polaris ranger. Next we will also need to gather the new tire, a jack, an impact wrench, and 17 mm socket. You will attach the socket to the impact wrench in order to take off the lug nuts that holds the tire on the motorized vehicle. Once you have all of your supplies gathered, you can move on to the next step.
Step 2: Lifting the Car
Next, you will place the jack under the motorized vehicle in a secure or flat spot, so you do not bend or break anything under the vehicle. Do not place the jack on pipes or cords under the vehicle, as this may damage the vehicle. Pump the jack handle so the vehicle is slightly raised off the ground. You do not want the vehicle too high in the air or the jack may slip and the vehicle will fall back to the ground. Once the vehicle is off the ground, you may move onto the next step.
Step 3: Taking the Lug Nuts Off
Now you will use the impact wrench and socket to take the lug nuts off the tire. Some lug nuts may be different sizes, but the size of mine are 17 mm, therefore I am using a 17 mm socket. You need to make sure the wrench is on loosen mode (left is loosen mode, right is tighten mode) to take off the lug nuts. Now that your impact wrench is in the right mode and has the correct socket size, you can start to take off the lug nuts. You will want to take the lug nuts off in a certain order, starting at the top of the tires lug nut, then to the bottom lug nut, then to the left lug nut, then to the right. Think of this as a star motion. Doing this helps to ensure there is not bending or twisting on the lug nuts or the stud. Once all of the lug nuts are removed, you may move onto the next step.
Step 4: Replacing the Tire
Fourth, you will take the bad tire off the vehicle, and replace with the new tire. You want to check your new tire to make sure there is the correct amount of air in the tire, and that the tires does not have any holes or leaks in it. You also want the valve stem or the shiny part of the rim facing out. Once the new tire is placed back on the vehicle, you may move onto the next step.
Step 5: Replacing the Lug Nuts
Lastly, you will place the lug nuts back into the threads of the tire. You will want to start placing the lug nuts on by hand to ensure that they are on the threads straight. You will get your impact wrench and socket back out to tighten the lug nuts the rest of the way. You will want to make sure the impact wrench is now in tighten mode. You will replace the lug nuts in the same order as before, top, bottom, left, right. You will want to double check that all of the lug nuts are tightened as best as they can be, to make sure your tire is on correctly. Once all of the lug nuts are tightened, you can lower and remove the jack from under the vehicle. You have now successfully changed a tire. Thank you for listening!
